Earthdawn 1st Edition Character

The German Tanelorn forum has also an Earthdawn section and sometimes I have a look at the topics and discussions there. Recently a guy called Kaspi called for help to update his online Earthdawn Character Generator to the RedBrick 3rd Edition. I had never heard of his generator and so I had a look at it.

Kaspi wrote the generator for his group and added an option to save and load generated characters. Right now the character generator is based on a mix of Earthdawn versions ED 1, 2 and ideas of the 3rd edition (for example it is using the ADM of the third edition).

Re: edition - Most Earthdawn editions stick pretty close to the original source material. 1st edition isn't without flaw - we'll get into that - but 2nd and 3rd edition, whether or not they tried to 'fix' things, ended up adding a lot of stupid crap. Change Edition: Depending upon which character sheet is loaded, By default the campaign is set to ether Earthdawn 4th edition or 1879 1st Edition and the sheet tries very hard to automate all the correct rules it can. You can change it to Earthdawn 3rd or 1st editions. Be it 1st, 2nd, Classic, 3rd or 4th Edition of Earthdawn. One fanmade Earthdawn 4th Edition character sheet was already introduced on the blog, even before the official release was made. Now, for actually casting these ewrthdawn, the rulebook suffers from a serious case of vagueness.

Kaspi is currently working on an update to a clean 3rd edition generator without spells or multi-discipline characters. I recently contacted Kaspi and he told me that the he will adjust the current generator to work with the ED 3rd Edition, but didn’t have time to work on it now nor can he provide any release date. He also stated that the Javascript and the PHP scripts are free and may be changed or developed by anyone who can see through the clutter.

I already used the generator to create some characters and have to admit that its potential is huge and it could become the successor of the old Second Step Character Generator. Go test it, tell me what you think.

This is an unofficial online character generator for the Earthdawn RPG (mostly 2nd edition). It uses the alternative discipline mechanics as proposed by RedBrick for the 3rd edition but with custom talent options based on the 1st and 2nd edition talents. There might also be some house rules incorporated into some of the talents but the basic character generation rules (using the attribute purchase method) match the ones from 2nd edition. There is also an overview page for all the discipline talent options used in this generator.

The current program was tested in Firefox 3.x and needs a modern browser with a decent Javascript engine. It uses some server-side scripts also in order to retrieve the basic data but it would be possible to convert it to a strictly client-side tool. If you want to use your own data and rules just get the script and build your own on top of it (it's open source). In case of questions drop me a line: webmaster [at] behindthemirrors.de

Don't reload the page during character creation or you will lose all your entries. There is a save/load feature hidden under the 'Tools' section. And of course the source is freely accessible and modifiable, therefore dear game master don't expect the saved characters to be always valid. In order to print the page set all the page margins in your browser's print dialog to 0, then it should all fit nicely onto a single sheet of paper.
